YUI Theater — Nicholas Zakas and Victor Tsaran: “Accessibility on the Yahoo Homepage (58 min.)”
August 16, 2010 at 12:53 pm by Allen Rabinovich | In Accessibility, Development, YUI Theater | 4 CommentsIn June, Yahoo! hosted a BayJax meetup dedicated to web accessibility. Nicholas Zakas, Yahoo! homepage developer, and Victor Tsaran, Yahoo! senior accessibility program manager, gave a talk on the process of making Yahoo!’s homepage highly accessible.
We apologize for the uneven audio levels: there were technical issues with the microphones that we unfortunately were only able to adjust towards the second half of the talk.

Great video and very informative, however I’m a bit confused as the home page I see (currently) on Yahoo.com is not as accessible as the one you’re demoing.
For example, there is tabbed content in the middle column at the top – news stories/teaser at the top and a series of tabs beneath. These only work if I tab through them – there is no way to arrow through them to the left or right. This means there is no way of scrolling to the next set of news stories.
Just confused as the version you showed seemed a lot more accessible than this one…

Hi Mike,
The page has changed slightly since we gave this talk, but all of the accessibility features are still in place. Keep in mind that a lot of the features we showed require a newer browser (Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3, Safari 4) to work properly as these are the browsers that natively support ARIA.
For non-ARIA browsers, we disable certain features so as not to disrupt the user experience with half-functional features. From your description, it’s likely you’re using a browser that doesn’t support ARIA.
