YUI Theater — Scott Schiller: “Web Audio: HTML5 + Flash (in a tree)” (26 min.)

At the February 6, 2012 BayJax event at Yahoo!, Flickr Frontend Engineer and SoundManager developer Scott Schiller (@schill) uncovered HTML5 audio’s dark and dirty secrets, and explained why he thinks both HTML5 audio and Flash audio have their place. Then he wowed the audience with a couple of spectacular live demos that you won’t want to miss.

YUI Theater — Stephen Woods: “Creating Responsive HTML5 Touch Interfaces” (24 min.)

At the February 6, 2012 BayJax event at Yahoo!, Flickr Frontend Engineer Stephen Woods (@ysaw) shared his hard-won advice for building responsive touch-based interfaces using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. He also revealed how Star Trek: The Next Generation predicted the need for instant user feedback in a touch-based UI and how Tivo’s slow UI was made bearable by a simple “bloop” sound.

Tired of Ant? Check out buildy

YUI community superstar Eamon Brosnan (aka mosen) has been working on a build framework called buildy that he hopes will provide an alternative to Apache’s Ant. Here’s the sexy part: it’s written in JavaScript on Node.js, so for frontenders, that makes assembling and maintaining build processes a snap.

The project started with the goal of creating a fast, extensible replacement for YUI Builder that had an API in a familiar language. Seeing that a lot of people are invoking Uglify and JSLint or JSHint or some combination of existing Node.js based tools for their projects, he set out to create a framework that can standardize how those tools talk to each other, and give implementers a way to easily add more tools into the mix.

Join us to talk about the current state of development, the existing feature list, get an overview of the API, roadmap, and how you can help.

If there’s time, while we have Eamon on the line, we’ll also talk about his ybuild project, a command line utility for preparing YUI components.

Yeti update

Reid has freed up some time for Yeti development recently, and there are some worthwhile updates to broadcast in the world of automated JavaScript testing. There have been the standard issue bug fixes and enhancements, of course, but during the hour, we’ll talk about some of the more important changes, including:

  • the new iframeless design
  • the new ability to share a testing hub with a team of developers, and
  • how to follow development and when to expect a release

Checking in with Dav Glass

It’s been a while since we checked in with Dav Glass. You know he’s always good for some interesting innovation, and it’s about time to get a report on the new shiny (or green-on-black) stuff he’s been working on for the last few months.

Since Dav took over Loader, he’s been pretty busy doing the usual thing of adding test coverage and improving performance, but there are a few new things on top of that that are worth noting. Otherwise, he’s made some updates to the YUI core and npm packages to make YUI development even easier in Node.js. And, knowing him, he probably has a few more rabbits to pull out of a few more beanies.

YUI Theater — Gonzalo Cordero: “Yahoo! Local Mobile Case Study” (33 min.)

In this talk from YUIConf 2011, Yahoo! frontend engineer Gonzalo Cordero (@goonieiam) reveals how Yahoo! Local used YUI 3 to develop their iOS app using a native Objective-C wrapper with HTML5 and YUI running in a UIWebView. He argues that there’s no such thing as a desktop web and a mobile web — there’s just “the web”, and YUI is the perfect framework for people who want to write web apps that run everywhere.
