YUI Training in Switzerland

May 24, 2011 at 10:26 am by Tobias Ebnöther | In Development, YUI Events | 1 Comment

Liip recently sponsored YUI training given by Tobias Ebnöther for beginners with some basic knowledge about JavaScript. Our space was very limited so we didn’t announce this very publicly.

The Morning

Starting early I had a first group of developers who were keen on learning about YUI. Most of them were already familiar with other major libraries or version 2 of YUI. The feedback from the group was great, as everyone loved the very clean way that YUI enables you to solve daily problems and potentially reuse code. We had a little discussion about using the sandboxing technique or just rolling with SimpleYUI. While the simple version enabled a nice start into the workshop most people seemed to prefer the sandboxed instances.

The Afternoon

In the afternoon I had a very interesting group with a mix of developers, customers, and product owners. At first I was a bit afraid because of the very different knowledge levels, but as it turned out, with everyone supporting each other we nearly matched the speed of the morning group. The feedback here was good as well: people were mainly astonished how fast you can do something with a draggable widget. So I showed them some nice examples of how people put together things in the gallery, and we even had some time to build our own modules.

Next

Giving a full day of training was a great and exhausting experience. Next time I’ll plan a little bit more time in the morning as 3 hours were rather short for a full introduction. We will have an intermediate course based on the “YUI Building Blocks” material at Liip Zurich on June 9. The space will be very limited again but leave a comment to this post if you’re interested in joining.

Introducing people to YUI was real fun so we want to host a more public training in Zurich soon, probably sometime in July. It would be good to know how many people are interested so drop a comment if you would like to come.

YUI 3 “Building Blocks, Modules, and Applications” Workshop Coming to Portland, and Free!

April 19, 2011 at 3:32 pm by Luke Smith | In Development, YUI Events | 6 Comments

YUI, together with the Yahoo! Developer Network, is excited to sponsor a complimentary YUI 3 “Building Blocks, Modules, and Applications” Workshop on Sunday, May 1, 2011 in Portland, Oregon. This is a great way to kick-off your time at JSConf, but you do not need a JSConf ticket to attend the workshop. All are invited to this free event!

I will be joined by fellow Yahoo! Gonzalo Cordero for a full-day of hands-on training where you will learn how to build stateful classes, plugins, and widgets using the YUI 3 infrastructure components, package them into reusable modules, and assemble them into a simple application. The morning class will focus on what the building blocks (such as Base and Widget) have to offer and when and how to use them. The afternoon class will get into more advanced class configurations, setting up the Loader to combine your hosted modules, and setting up application controllers to relate your various module classes and APIs via custom events.

Space is limited, so reserve your seat today at http://training.bocoup.com/PreJSConf-2011/

Online YUI 3 Introductory Course Fri, Jan 21st

January 13, 2011 at 3:07 pm by Luke Smith | In Development, YUI Events | 13 Comments

Next Monday Friday I will be hosting an online YUI 3: Intro course for anyone that wants to attend.

This is the same course that has been taught within Yahoo! for about a year now, and the same one presented at YUIConf last November. It covers these topics:

  • Basic DHTML – DOM traversal and modification and subscribing to events
  • Ajax using Y.io
  • Class API patterns – Instantiation, configuration, and event subscriptions for widgets and utilities
  • YUI sandbox – API and environment set up and loading strategies

There are exercises throughout the material to get your hands in the YUI habit as well as your brains.

The 3.5 hour course will run from 9:30am until 1pm PST next Monday, Jan 17th Friday, Jan 21st. Connection info is:

  1. Dial in to 1-888-371-8922 (Skype is great for non-US participants)
  2. Enter the attendee code 4718 8953#
  3. Join the screen sharing session (this will prompt you to install the Adobe Connect plugin if this is your first time using it)

I know it’s short notice, but you can blame that on Rey Bango. So if you missed the intro course at YUIConf or you just want a thorough, hands on, getting started with YUI 3 training, come on over and bring a friend!

UPDATE: Moved from Monday the 17th to Friday the 21st

I forgot that Monday is a holiday (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day), so I’m moving the course to Friday the 21st. I can use the extra time to work out the logistics of recording it for posterity. If you have any recommendations on the best way to record a 3.5hr presentation, I’d love to hear it!

UPDATE: Recording available

The full recording, course content, and slides are available for download (250M)

The zip contains OSX filesystem cruft, the audio is spotty, and there’s plenty of room for improvement, but hey, it’s out there!

YUIConf 2010 Summary

November 17, 2010 at 2:57 pm by Jenny Donnelly | In Development, YUI Events | Comments Off

Thanks to everyone who came out to YUIConf 2010 last week! It was a jam-packed three days of learning, sharing, and being excited by all the great work being done in the YUI community.

We hosted over 200 attendees from all the over the world (Prague! Sydney! Recife! Chico!) who enjoyed 34 technical sessions, an invigorating panel discussion, an informal show-and-tell, a uniquely memorable Douglas Crockford keynote, and one very popular hands-on introductory workshop led by our own Allen Rabinovich and Luke Smith.

Many attendees took photographs (check out the YUIConf tag on Flickr); we’ve been enjoying David Calhoun and Reid Burke‘s photostreams in particular.

We’re hard at work now processing videos from the conference, and we’ll post them to YUI Theater as soon as they become available. You can expect to watch gems like Luke’s YUI 3: Below the Surface, A Whirlwind Tour of AlloyUI Components in the YUI 3 Gallery by Nate Cavanaugh and Eduardo Lundgren, and CSS 3 Beyond the Hype by Nicole Sullivan. In the meantime we’ll be posting the links to the slide decks at http://yuilibrary.com/yuiconf2010/schedule.php.

Sneak previews of a few sessions are already available in HD:

We’re thrilled to be able to bring everyone together like this once a year. It’s truly rewarding to be part of such an engaged, creative, and warm community. What did you enjoy most? Post in the comments below what you thought!
